is in the northeast part of oakland. there's a massive sinkhole there. chad myers is in the cnn weather center watching these storms as they develop. dan, let me start with you. what's the story on the sinkhole? >> reporter: well, as you said, ashleigh, it is a real mess out here. let me show you what's going on. you can see crews here removing some of the debris. this is a massive sinkhole. this is 80 feet long, 15 feet deep, 40 feet wide. let me explain how this happened. there's a creek that runs beneath the concrete, and it got clogged up and it just washed away all the dirt, and with that the road. you got the whole street closed. it's going to be closed for several months. what crews had to do, they actually had to set up a temporary sewer line. you can see it right here because when the street gave way, it actually ruptured the line. this is the temporary line, also a temporary water line. lafayette where we are, it's about 20 miles east of san francisco, and the whole bay area has been impacted by a series of storms. the storm that's coming tonight, this will be the fourth storm in abo

. landslides now becoming a serious problem. chad myers now joining me live in atlanta. the reason we're talking land slides as well is because fires past are causing problems present. >> you bet. 1.6 million acres in idaho burned, mostly in the hills. 1.2 million acres burned mostly in washington and oregon. when the trees and brush burn off, there's no roots, the roots die and all of a sudden there's nothing holding the dirt back from becoming mud when we get rain like we've had and mudslides. 2012/13 winter may be known as the mudslide danger. if you have a burn scar above your home, you need to always pay attention when the rain comes in like it has. today is a day for a break. today is maybe to clean some of this stuff up. there was that mudslide, we showed you the picture, don't need to show you again, but there's more rain on the way. we have about 16 days in the forecast here. one storm slamming into british columbia, and than another one into western washington and oregon. so far southern california is dry. this is not that el nino type of weather pattern yet. but i am very c
things get ugly. chad myers is here about details. does anybody still have to be worried? >> yes, from montgomery to almost new orleans with tornado watches. we have a couple of warnings in effect as well. remember, the warning word has more letters, and therefore it's more important. it's the bad one. when you hear "warning" that's the bad one. tornado warning is worse than a watch. watch just means, hey, something could happen today. let me show you what happened over the weekend with the same system on the north side. it's not breaking news when we show you snow in wisconsin, but this has been a very dry beginning of the snow season up there. they can really use the snow cover, and also, they want to play in it. the people in the south -- they want snow to go away. people up north want to play because they have all the toys. down south not expecting this in dallas, texas this morning. it wasn't really sticking but it was blowing around in the lights. wfaa is a pretty sight there. maybe get you in the mood to buy gloves. >> that's denton, texas, right? >> denton, don't mess with texa

's meteorologist chad myers has the latest from the cnn severe weather center. chad, these powerful storms in les less than a week. could it have been a whole lot worse? >> certainly. and there will be. there are four more storms to come. we had three. one comes form tomorrow and three lined up like planes heading into an international airport. this is going to be a wet week. 23 inches of rain. not snow. we've had feet of snow in the higher elevations. but 23 inches of rain in spots that has to all run off. now the ground's saturated. it's going to run off every time it rains again. talked about power outages. look at this. this is category 2, 3, 4 wind gusts here in parts of california in the highest of elevations knocking trees down, knocking power lines down as well. backing up to last night, storm moved onshore, drid out today a little bit. but another batch of moisture coming on shore tomorrow. rain starting tomorrow about 10:00 local time. rains in the same spots it's been raining for days, like ten days. raining in parts of seattle down to portland. this is light rain at best. it gets wors
